Pretti wasn’t protesting, he was obstructing.
He’s been known to resist arrest, as evidenced by his recent death, so it’s not a stretch to believe he resisted and only got a broken rib for his troubles.
It seems either he didn’t learn, or he was after a more rewarding adventure.

When he got his rib broken, was he being arrested, was he arrested and charged with anything?

Not that it excuses ICE at all, but someone threw something at the lead truck before the truck with the lights passed by. Seemed like a water bottle or something. Not a huge threat, so I don't know about the retaliation from ICE being appropriate.

Blowing whistles and honking to intentionally thwart a ICE operation is obstruction of justice.   Just so you know.  

He was an idiot to bring a weapon to a protest or an anti-ice operation.  Not only is it illegal, he also had no ID that’s needed to carry and as we now know this wasn’t his first altercation with ICE in just the past week.  

Cops go on immediate high alert when they find out someone has a gun, it’s how they get killed if they don’t.  The dynamic of the interaction can go to 110% in a blink of an eye.  I’m pretty sure this is what happened.  It’s often a matter of life or death to them.  Most people don’t know that feeling or realize how fast it happens, it’s not for the faint at heart.  

This should all be a lesson to everyone, to stay away from ICE operations but I have little faith that the people doing the agitating learned any lesson at all.  They never do…rinse and repeat.

"I" am not celebrating a death.
"I" am unconcerned in opining about justice or righteousness not yet manifest.

But I am concerned with a stream of relentless schadenfreude, resentful reactions to it, and a few people who seem to be "relentlessly driven towards bot-like sloganeering."

Discussing an objectified time of human crisis is the exact point where the first thing you must acknowledge is "I wasn't there," and "I don't know the people involved."

"Law Enforcement" lost it's pride when it was militarized... now it's about projecting force, the finality and brutality of exposing oneself to such authority... and those few who basely abuse it, making what honor that exists into a suspect motive. 

"Activism" has been poisoned by "professionals" who celebrate "headlines" and pander to their sponsors who respond to metrics alone.  Death has value to them, it "sells."  These poor maybe even well-meaning people were doing that thing the were told is "activism."  But they are never told that when you die... your family may be burned in effigy (take that as a metaphor.)

Both sides lost this "quasi" debate by their own words... but as usual, not in what was said, but how it was said, and when.

If anyone wants to address this post with me, of course I will respond... but I'm withdrawing from all arguments about why these deaths "serve" some purpose.

In any group setting, human nature and the laws of probability ensure that, given enough members, all types of human characteristics will eventually be represented.

FWIW, this is how many communicate now, get the news, form opinions etc.  Some suggest thats the plan all along, TPTB push a button, and X% of people follow that, while missing other governmental activities
