Did they go after nicotine because of money

Can't stand the smell of cigarettes, but aromatic pipe tobacco has always made me smile when I smell it. Always has ever since I first smelled it as a kid. I contemplated picking up a pipe for a "every once in a while" smoking session, but I honestly don't see the worth in it after having smoked cigarettes for so long and feeling so much better now that I've quit.
