Debate has been a part of scientific progress for a long time, an important aspect when denying ignorance. It is a good thing when people can be civil and reasonable about it. It is not always an easy thing to do when passions are going and does take practice to get better at it.
I don't know how much of a difference it really makes. For myself, it has helped polish up a few parts of the puzzle having ideas and perceptions challenged.
