"Free speech" is the primary social component of human dignity.
While yelling "Fire!" in a movie theater represents an obvious peril... if there IS a fire, it's not only acceptable... it's advisable as a warning.
I can't see how it is not evident to people that the very foundation of freedom is responsibility.
But in the end - this problematic concept has much to do with never talking about it without injecting some ideological baggage into it.
Freedom of speech is not some vague, undefinable thing.
It's simple.. You speak to be heard... say whatever you want, just don't expect others to refrain from reacting to hearing it.
Also, to speak is to self-identify... say hateful things and be heard as a hateful person... cop attitude and expect to be treated poorly.
We should really teach these things to our kids...
