Despite what Wikipedia will tell you, Lincoln was basically a modern day republican and the secessionists were Democrats. The Democrat party continued to back African slavery full up into the early 1900s. I think the only reason they really stopped was the great depression ergo lack of demand followed by racial tensionsvin the late 50s through early 70s.
The point is, the assassination promoted the real kickoff of the civil war.
