Why? Well, because it would likely provide some insight into the kid's conflicted mind and thus what motives he may have had. I personally think he was just that, 'conflicted'. He had one parent who subscribed to one party's ideology (democrat), and the other parent who allegedly subscribed to another (independent) ideology, yet he was seemingly registered as a 3rd political ideology (republican). Reports from a HS friend today claim he frequently commented and was very outspoken about how he hated ALL mainstream politicians (i.e. republican, independent, and democratic). I can easily see how this might confuse a formative mind from a younger age, at-home arguments about different ideologies, so he maybe rebelliously goes and registers for a party that neither of his parents belong to out of defiance. Then, after several years in the workforce, he begins to associate with a group of anti-establishment radicals who twist his mind by spewing non-stop hatred and anarchist ideas, so he snaps and acts out at the first mainstream politician which shows up in his 'back yard'.
To Blaine's point (albeit disagreeable), it does appear he acted alone, and thus is responsible for his actions. BUT having intelligence into the group whom may have indoctrinated him with hatred and notions of violence, possibly even a domestic terror group bent on inspiring others to act out similarly, would be valuable information to have in preventing future such attacks.

It is being reported by numerous MSM outlets. Are you asking for a list of specifically which ones? You can go look that up easily enough. Here in the US, this information is a matter of Public Record and fairly easily obtainable by about anyone with a modicum of knowledge how to request the same. As long as no PII (Personally Identifiable Information) is released, it's often as simple as a phoned in request.
