D.I. Tutorial -- Escape From The Dreaded Quote Box!
#1
I know the title sounds like a horror movie, but I’ve seen many of you getting trapped. The quote box can be a nightmare, but you don’t need to lose sleep over it, especially if you’re using a mobile device.

Ok, so, you hit ‘Reply’ to someone, and their post appears in the editor with a nice rounded box around it. So far, so good. But where do you write your comment? I see many type straight after the last line being quoted, but beware…, you’re still trapped in the quote box.

If you’re not sure where you are, the solution is to put the editor in source mode (the penultimate button in the toolbar); you will now see the quote tags. Tap after the last tag, hit a couple of enters/carriage returns and add your reply. If you don't like writing in that mode, just toggle back to normal mode and carry on typing.

On a PC, in normal view, you get a little red carriage return symbol when you hover near the bottom edge of the quote box, which can be clicked to place the cursor after the quote. As far as I can see, that feature doesn't work on mobiles or tablets, so the best solution is what I described above.

Oh, and whilst you're editing, feel free to remove any irrelevant parts of the quoted text. This practice is especially helpful to pinpoint what you're replying to and to shorten those really long posts.

Happy quoting!!

...

To add, it is good practice to add the "..." where you have taken out text in a quote. That way nobody will accuse you of trying to hide the fact you removed text if the subtext is cherry-picked in a misleading way.

Yes, very good point, Halfswede!  Thumbup

Use of the ellipsis is something I preach, but don't always practice; I must remember to do better.

Is there a way to answer line by line besides cutting and pasting the quote into your reply, then setting the replies apart somehow?

Yes, absolutely, but that's for another tutorial; give me a couple of days.

Thanks Harte, that's exactly what the final output looks like.

I'll explain, step-by-step, how to arrive at that result in a couple of ways.

That method is explained in my other tutorial, specifically dedicated to that end.

If you have further questions, please post there.

If I'm understanding your question, just hit the reply button that's at the bottom of the post you want to quote.

It auto-quotes the post with the member name and post ID included.

then edit out any parts you don't need or want.
