NO LONGER APPLICABLE
At the very top and bottom of the page of each thread, there are two more button…
'Subscribe’ and 'New Reply’
It is the generic 'New Reply' that works in conjunction with the ‘+Quote’ activation/deactivation.
So, here are some examples of the options you have when posting:
1. Simply pressing the generic 'New Reply' will not quote anyone and the editor will be blank:
2. If I wished to quote a particular member in the thread,- I can first press the ‘+Quote’, activating the function (note that it changes to
‘-Quote’.
- Then press the generic ‘New Reply’. In this case, the post will contain the quote.
This option gives exactly the same result as simply pressing the ‘Reply’ button, so no advantage there, just two ways to fry the same eggs.
3. Now, here is the real magic of the ‘+Quote’ feature... If I wished to quote two or more posts with my reply.- Then I go to each one and activate the ‘+Quote’ button.
- Then I hit the generic 'New Reply' and voila, I’ve included them both in one fell swoop.
4. Confused yet? You will be… If I wished to grab a post from one thread to use in another thread, then the ‘+Quote’ is your buddy!- As in example 3, activate the post/s you wish to transpose in your reply on another thread.
- Then, go to that thread and hit generic ‘New Reply’.
- Before doing anything else, NOTE some new options under the editing window…
You should see, “You have selected one post outside of this thread. Quote this post too, deselect this post”
If you click on “Quote this post too”, hey presto, your reply will include the quote from the other thread.
Observations/Tips: - So, when you simply want to post in a thread, with no particular reference to anyone, then use the generic ‘New Reply’ at the top/bottom of the thread. This is the option I often use without having to resort to removing the unwanted quote afterwards.
- BEWARE!! once you activate the ‘+Quote’ function, it will remain in that state for future interactions in that thread and beyond. So, remember to deactivate them if they are in the ‘-Quote’ state... This stuff can really mess with your head.
- Ok, that’s all for now… I’ll report back if I notice any other hidden goodies.
Ciao for now ![[Image: beer.gif]](https://denyignorance.com//images/addsmilies/beer.gif) [/align]
I started playing around, pushing all the buttons and watching all the blinking lights. I think I discovered what the ‘Quote’ button is for and how it works.
Let's begin at the beginning. At the bottom of each post there are those three buttons…
'Reply’ ‘+Quote’, ‘Report’

Nice tutorial. I do on occasion desire to grab text from one thread for posting in another. If nothing else, I just copy/paste the text, quote, and italisize. It is a bit crude though, and having the source header including the text you wish to quote would be preferable.
I recall a couple months back there was this one useful feature that appears to have wandered off around the same time I briefly investigated the quote button being referenced here. You could just place the cursor in the reply box where you want the quote to go, highlight the text you wish to quote, right click on it, select "quote" and voila!! And you could just multi-quote to your hearts content this way from within a single reply. Now it's just multiple replies that are combined to a single post, which is okay too I guess, but I usually need to edit for spacing.
Mod interference. It's moving time again.

Your images are broken, please consider fixing that for the visual learners.
Or it's my mobile browser being difficult.
I can't help what my face does when you talk

Yes, thanks TzarChasm, I know. The images were hosted elsewhere and I can't recoup them at the moment.
In any case, I'll be redoing a new tutorial, as this one wasn't clear enough and confused many.
For now, the text is correct, so I've left it up until I am able to publish the new one.

i dont do it that way if i want to reply to multiple quotes in one post i first reply to one of them, then reply to the other except instead of posting the reply i copy it to clipboard and then edit the first post i made and paste it in but i think that may not be the best way because then whoever i replied to doesnt get an alert notification that i replied i think? it is confusing practice anyway best done when i'm in a mood to use commas and the shift key as well haha.

Yeah, that can work, too, UB. However, you need to view the posts in source mode to be able to grab everything, including the post ID, otherwise, people can't follow the trail, so to speak.
In it's simplest form, here is a summary of the quote function I wrote in another post... maybe it's a bit simpler to understand.
Quote:Ok, that button is only used if you want to quote multiple people in a single reply.
So, lets say I want to quote two or more members, I click on the +quote in the posts I want to refer to.
Then, when I click reply at the bottom of the page, a message appears under the editor, telling me that multiple posts have been selected. At that point, I have the choice to ignore the selection or to use it.
If I use it, the editor will create a reply with both posts incorporated, including who said what and a link back to the person's post.
Once in the editor, the text can be manipulated however I want. Just be careful not to break the quote structure.
The cheap and nasty option would be to select, copy and paste the bits I want to quote, but I'd be losing the references to the posts themselves, thus creating some confusion.
The beauty of the feature is that I can also select/+quote posts from different threads.
The downside is that, once selected, those quotes are remembered until I deselect them manually in case I didn't use them previously.

oh yes i turned on source mode in the settings panel and didn't look back otherwise the editor has a habit of trapping one inside a quote block haha plus preview mucks things up and image resize and align dont work.
i appreciate the quote button functionality but sadly it is a ux flow that 90% will find cumbersome and unusable plus shouldn't it be a checkbox "include quote in reply", plus is makes the reply button ambiguous because that quotes too, etc. too clever by half.
edit: also thank you and are we just pretending because it just shows colon beer colon now?

Ok, I've updated the tutorial and fixed the broken images. I'm still not happy, as it could be clearer, but I'll eventually do a new one when inspiration strikes.
And please note: I used technique #3 of the tutorial to quote more than one member in this post.
