I think it's linked to a few things and began a few years ago. It is part of my Tinnitus which comes and goes.

My Hippocampus was also given a jolt and the memories came flooding back, perhaps due to the new bloodflow to the area at the base of the brain and top of the spinal column. There was one night in particular which is unforgettable when I had done some Astral Travelling. Boy did I go "Far Out". My head hit the pillow that night and with my eyes closed it was like my whole head inside and the whole room was brightly lit and bathed in white light. I was frozen in motion and wondered if I was either dying or was being visited by someone/thing. I wasn't scared, rolled with it, realised it was something unexplainable and that I wasn't dying and that I was OK. I also remember grinning and then I slept like a baby. It's the only time that happened.

I have terrible sleep terrors. Used to feel like I got shocked by electricity when I was about to fall asleep. Now it’s mostly instead of falling asleep it’s like getting a brief anxiety attack and or jumping up and gasping for breath. Never heard of this exploding part though.

nope ... no witchcraft and nothing to do with any position on the Israel/Gaza war.
It's not a supernatural thing.   
(I'm very catholic ... daily mass and rosary and first saturday confessions etc)

It's just a thing that happens to some people.
Medicine says it has to do with the brain stem they think.
Mine started about 6 years ago.
Doesn't happen all the time ...just sometimes.
Annoying ...

My husband had it happen perhaps three times or so.
His sounded like 'a crash' he said.
Mine is static like from between TV stations.
Just as you start to fall asleep it gets turned up really high in the head
and then it goes back down just as fast.   Lasts only a second 
but it wakes you up and you have to start the sleep process all over.

What you are experiencing sounds allot like astral projection, you can learn to control it.

the gasping for breath sounds perhaps like apnea? perhaps that is related to sleep posture? i have had sleep paralysis episodes that correlated to apnea. and others that didn't. also perhaps something like sensory processing disorder.

as well as that maypole / merry-go-round / fortuna's wheel / riemann surface thingie sirius is talking about.
