That must have been around the mid 80s, and you tend to only get banned after a ton??
It was, and it was over a ton.

I have not read all posts yet, but I blame Ralph Naider.
I was not here.

I am guessing that it's a lot like scientists, who ask themselves "Can We", instead of "Should We". Auto manufacturers know that speed sells. It was on the lips of almost everyone when I was a kid: "what'll she do in the quarter?" And we sought to tweak engines and suspension systems, fuel additives, and even tires to get that last little bit of horsepower/thrust that we could afford. Even now, at 68 years old, I have a need for speed. When I was younger I fulfilled my need by jumping out of perfectly good airplanes and falling at 'terminal velocity'.
To answer your question, I don't think there is a "logical" or practical reason for autos to go that fast. I think it's part of the human spirit which wants more, better, faster.

I am a very good driver. My Darlin' is an excellent driver, far superior to my own skills. She used to race on the SCCA circuit when we lived in the U.S. She is still a gearhead.
When we got married, she gave me two conditions: (1) I had to become a Raiders fan; I could still love my Seahawks, but I had to love the Raiders also and (2) I had to learn to love NASCAR. Oh Joy. A three-hour left turn. But you know, once I got to know the drivers and met several of them and learned what they have to do and the importance of the Pit Crew, I grew to genuinely enjoy it, and still do.
She doesn't race anymore, but it's not just a man thing. It's a gearhead thing.

Because it's what I payed for....

Well, when I was a teenager and in my twenties, I had a mustang and a camaro. top speed on the camaro was a hundred forty, I used to do that on long stretches of backroad coming back at night for the weekend from Sheboygan to hancock MI. The mustang, just got up to about a hundred ten fast, I could beat almost anyone on short races.
The reason for cars going fast is to get rid of the idiots who drive real fast. I beat the odds and survived...well, I may be on my eighth life already, maybe I died and moved to a different reality quite a few times.
Make all cars go a hundred fifty and have a minimum speed limit of a hundred twenty...no need for abortions or birth control to keep the population down.

Because there is nothing some beers and a friend can't fix. How I survived my 20's is a mystery. God bless Japan and their perfectly good engines they write off and export for next to nothing.

For some reason, around DC there are a lot of serious asshat Tesla drivers.
I love cars, and can go on about it, but I'd welcome autopilot driving with open arms.
Grandpa Clark taught automotive to GIs returning from Europe, because his son was KiA. Mom had an MG, Austin and new 1960 MB. She met dad at the Mercedes dealership. I worked on his cars by 14 and at 9 learned to drive a stick shift Porsche. Got pulled over for it because the cop couldn't see anyone behind the wheel. I never had an accident, no meaningful tickets and am super careful, although I do hussle when traffic permits.
Should my car be limited after such a rich and trustworthy history?
