Too much Hollywood?
I'm pretty sure we've been monitored for quite some time -- without interference.
I think they really have no use for us and we are the "ghetto" of the universe. Maybe some resources on earth they might need.

It’s probably the Neanderthal thinking on display in some of these posts that prevents them from revealing themselves. I think people will find that they have moved on from fighting and killing. Pointless and stupid.
anyway, if I’m wrong it would be over quickly and I doubt we’d know much about it.

First -- my pet peeve is thinking there is only one race of off-planet beings.
Second -- I do believe there is some kind of Federation of Planets. Annihilating an inferior race is not valued.
I look at it like an anthropologist. Some are benevolent and want to study from afar. Some want to study by with contact. And -- of course -- there are always those who only think how they benefit.
And don't forget politics -- politics is universal.

Start small. Do they like chocolate? I think it's a more valuable question than any that the brain-heavy Sagan-panels considered.
Considering the typical Grays, for example, they have thin mouths and noses. Which makes it doubtful they would enjoy flavourful Curry chickpea or otherwise.

I desperately hope your view is true, Annee. I have pondered these issues and it isn't a great departure for me to use the Earth as a macrocosm of galactic cosmology. In that altered universe, there is always a superintelligent, but amorally bloodthirsty entity. I would very much like a council, a Federation. I think supportive information might be that we haven't been vaporized yet, and Drake's Equation would suggest that advanced civilizations are legion, as the stars in the sky, so I have hope for this view.
I have said for at least 40 years that what humanity really needs is a decent predator. That would likely result in global unity. Well, unless humanity prevailed against the threat. Then, they'd likely fall back into the old awkward and violent tendencies, having learned nothing from history. Again.

Any resources we have they could find in the asteroid belt and in greater quantity...and as a bonus, they wouldn't have to deal with us.

Probably but there are so many abduction stories, and then there are the livestock mutilations.

First contact will be a derilect ship or damaged ship with survivors drifting through the system.. Nothing planned can possibly be achieved because of all the forms to ba filled out to allow a visit to this zoo of predators.
Our spicy foods would be considered chemical weapons. Our gravity bearly tolerable at best. Our diseases deadly. Our training for combat from such a young age totally beyond their understanding.
The abductions are just seeing if we can be useful as slaves or pets. Roge scientists and trophy hunters mostly.
We are protected by a level of government red tape beyond even their understanding. The rest of the galaxy has us quarantined in the hopes they don't catch anything.
I know too much and question everything.
Does anyone know the minimum safe distance of ignorance?
Did anyone ask the monkeys how much fun the barrel actually was?

In all reported contacts -- has anyone actually been harmed?
They report medical experiments -- but are returned unharmed.
Billy Meier (believe him or not) -- wouldn't keep his mouth shut -- so the off-planet beings left.
What about the nuclear rocket silos? Supposedly they were mysteriously disabled.
Hostility doesn't seem to be the intent.
Although -- I do wonder what they think of our violent portrayals of them.

Joking or not, that is close to how I look at it as well.
So, how do we exploit our lowly status...
