People don't know wtf they are doing in groups, the auroras combine into a greater entity. Everything gets amplified and it starts with base instincts and emotions, your everyday waking consciousness has no hope to compete with such a thing and your just overwhelmed. Flocks of birds or fish, it's easy to see the shape of the greater entity.

I wouldn't be hard on protesters and look more to what created the shambling beast and caused such a thing to come into exitance. The people live in pain and suffering, this all get's amplified. Have you ever suffered under another without anger or thoughts of vengeance, moral high ground only last while actions are directed towards you. When a friend falls you fall and drag whatever is around to hell with you. We all have dark thoughts that we suppress, in a group this is not possible once the beast forms.

Private, as in not part of their little religious circle, who did not like his views regarding the likes of the Holy Trinity, which  i think he rejected.
