Once a model of democracy and a true U.S. ally, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (Venezuela) has all but collapsed under the Communist regimes of the late Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro. In the 24 years since Hugo Chavez was first elected Venezuelan president in 1999, the country has violently cracked down on pro-democracy citizens and organizations, shattered its once oil-rich economy, empowered domestic criminal cartels, and helped fuel a hemispheric refugee crisis. Venezuela has swung from being one of the most prosperous, if not the most prosperous, country in South America to being one of the poorest. Its Communist leadership has also drawn closer to some of the United States’ greatest international foes, including the PRC and Iran, which have long sought a foothold in the Americas. Indeed, Venezuela serves as a reminder of just how fragile democratic institutions that are not maintained can be. To contain Venezuela’s Communism and aid international partners, the next Administration must take important steps to put Venezuela’s Communist abusers on notice while making strides to help the Venezuelan people. The next Administration must work to unite the hemisphere against this significant but underestimated threat in the Southern Hemisphere.

And despite how Project 2025 frames it, it don't matter how commie or democratic they are, either. Even if they had the freest elections in the world: no one is immune. Their talk about democracy is code for "against American interests", which is quite enough to know what's gonna happen, in my opinion. Sufficient justification.

Yeah, it's just silly at this point. The two framings, "Eliminate Evil Drugs Narco-State" for the right, and "Eliminate Anti-Democracy Dictator" for the left, are such kayfabe. Don't they realize the time for that is over? No on actually believes it, it's old-style political spin. That stuff is useless now: it used to be needed to create a "coalition of the willing", but that's 2010s thinking. Those who support Trump are just as ready to do so if he simply said "it's in our economic interest"; they don't need the drug story. Those who oppose Trump are going to take anything he says and find a way to seethe about it and oppose him, there's no way the "fighting for democracy" story will sway them. So why bother?

Just do what's best for America. Lying to ourselves is not part of that.

At one point, I was for legalizing all drugs as a Libertarian.

But then I saw (from working in Portland's hospitals) what that actually means.

People were LITERALLY walking over dead bodies in the streets.
