Acetaminophen is typically recommended by doctors to treat fever because it's effective and has very little side effects. It's generally considered safer than the alternatives, as far as I know. And no, it's not given out like candy. Doctors will always tell you only to take it when necessary.

Low grade fevers should not be drugged at all.
How many people call every time they have a sniffle to ask what to do? I sure don't.
