I am sure there are plenty of lawyers who take slam dunk immigration cases pro-bono. After 11 years of work getting there why would you just leave...I assume they kept dual citizenship...but after all that they just left without a fight?!?!
They are legal citizens and no, there aren't really any lawers available for pro bono or individual work. They are all swamped by illegal immigration cases being fought in multiple courts. They have money, but not law firm will represent them after Trump signed the executive order barring any firm representing illegal immigrants. They could have their licenses pulled or worse. I really want to chalk this up to a "mistake, one time problem" kinda deal, but my buddy is very worried. These folks live eat and breathe America. Gave them all the opportunity they could handle.
