Didn't Japan already beat them to it for humanoid robots that you can have sex with? 

They are both on a forefront, Just China seeks out the way to turn humanoid robots into CCP intel collectors, and Japan does something sex related.

There is an established industry and consumers in Japan regularly interact with AI affection-bots. You can literally buy Sailor Neptune! (I'm guessing).

Progress in robotics is moving fast, I found this interesting from your source:

A Chinese robotics company cut open the limbs of its IRON robot on stage, during a presentation, to prove that there was no person inside executing its smooth, human-like movements.

The article spends a lot of time on peoples suspicion this is less than it appears. Not surprising considering some of the attempted cons from the recent past.

Cutting a robot open does not prove it is autonomous though.
