so someone took a chisel or something and just hammered at it? Hans gave translations for both nebty names.
I like my Seti one better though.
If you've ever seen that comedy "A Knight's Tale" with Heath Ledger, you may remember the intro his friend Geoffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany) would give when Ledger appeared in the tournaments.
Quote:Today, today, you find yourselves equals.
For you are all equally blessed.
For I have the pride, the privilege, nay, the pleasure
Of introducing to you a Knight, sired by Knights,
A Knight who can trace his lineage back beyond Charlemagne.
I first met him atop a mountain near Jerusalem,
Praying to God,
Asking His forgiveness,
For the Saracen blood spilt by his sword.
Next, he amazed me still further in Italy
When he saved a fatherless beauty
From the would-be ravishings
Of her dreadful Turkish uncle.
In Greece, he spent a year in silence
Just to better understand the sound of a whisper.
And so, without further gilding the lily,
And with no more ado,
I give to you the Seeker of Serenity,
The Protector of Italian Virginity,
The Enforcer of our Lord God,
The One --
The Only --
Sir Ulrich Von Lichtenstein!!! The titulary used by Pharaohs was like that.
This is the titulary of Ramesses II:
Quote:The strong bull, beloved of Ra. (the Horus name)
Protector of Egypt who curbs foreign lands. (the Nebty name)
Rich in years, great in victories. (the Golden Horus name)
The Justice of Re is powerful, chosen of Re. (the Throne name)
Ramesses (Ra has fashioned him), beloved of Amun. (the Birth name)
And the titulary of his father, Seti l given in the same order as above:
Quote:The Strong bull who appeared in Thebes and sustains the Two Lands.
Renewing births, the strong-armed one who has repelled the Nine Bows.
Who has repeated appearances, strong of troops in all lands.
Eternal is the Truth of Ra.
Seti, beloved of Ptah. It is parts of both Nebty names overlapping in the photo in question.

I would like to add that the "plane, helicopter" image is GREATLY enhanced. It doesn't look like that in person -- and that "plane, helicopter" have never been found in any inscription (or as a hieroglyph) but the underlying ones have indeed been found all over that same temple.
The inscriptions don't make any sense if you toss in plane and helicopter... "Two Ladies: UFO! Helicopter! of Egypt, who Airplane! foreign lands" (that's approximately where those symbols fall.)

We know because this same phrase is repeated elsewhere. Ramesses just plastered over the surface (you can see where part of the plaster fell off... where part of the stonework just kind of "peeled away") He then had masons carve new inscriptions and as they did so, the chisels marked up the writing underneath the plaster.

Sloppy.
And all the places I read about, presented it like it was part of the original bas relief.

It was a standard practice (particularly for Ramesses II) -- kings would usurp older material and say that they did it and name it after themselves. Ramesses' usurpations are so common because he lived until age 96 and had one of the longest recorded reigns of ANY ruler anywhere.
In most cases, they'd improve the site a bit to justify their retitling the areas.
I saw one case (Ptolemaic era) where they were so flustered by the frequent régime change that they just left the cartouche blank ("to whom it may concern").
These are things you wouldn't know about unless you happened to do a lot of scholarly reading.

Changing history or adapting it has always been a part of the human condition. It like genealogical charts that showed European and other aristocrats had ancestors who were gods....etc. aggrandizement redux. Harte has claimed in the past that he is a direct ancestor of Archimedes
