Surveillance and Monetization-

I'm trying to wrap my mind around this. FB was working directly with advertisers selling data so that they could target the all important 13-17 year old market. But they didn't stop there- they also targeted young mothers and different ethnic groups. The book doesn't specify other categories but I suspect they would also target male/female, religious affiliation, political party memberships. Anything that they could sell as a target group to advertisers.

"There's a product team working on a tool that would allow advertisers to do this themselves, without FB help."

Engagement, more and more engagement was the key for FB. There were a few voices of sanity recommending that this be toned down, because this was having a negative impact on teenagers mental health.

"Face Book employed a series of "addiction by design" features specifically targeting and tailored to exploiting vulnerabilities of young users- engagement at all costs."

Then they made certain that the users did not have any control over the content that they were being sent.

Throughout the book it is clear that the senior executives, who all were from Harvard and all happened to be Jewish, were morally bankrupt. We always seem to have this Jewish angle cropping up. Sarah was the only one not from this club.

Meanwhile the FB staff were rapidly losing trust with the senior management. They knew what was going on and felt "complicit" with all the actions they were taking.

If you are it would be great if you could let your followers know about the book "Careless People" by Sarah Wynn- Williams and that she is to testify this week as a Facebook whistleblower. Facebook has managed to have the book censored. I've been covering some key whistleblower facts from the book - just in case.

From what is in the book Facebook capitalizes on the fact that senators do not know what key questions they should be asking and that works in their favor. We can't have that now can we? Lol

If Facebook policy is directed against her, won't citing her work anger the Facebook overlords of "who get's to say what and when?"

When Facebook is in charge-

Mark Zuckerberg's Internet.org, or as others named it Free Basic had not really taken hold in most counties that did not have the internet. This Internet.org was Completely controlled by FB, who made the decisions as to what sites users could access.

Myanmar was one country that had embraced this.
Phones were preloaded with FB and time on FB was not counted towards their minutes. "If you are on the internet you are on Face Book."
This country was embroiled in religious tensions between Buddhists and Muslims.
"At every turn, when FB's leaders see how FB is inflaming tensions and making an unstable and frightening situation worse, they do. . . nothing."

They are incompetent, that is the kindest comment I can make. Fake posts on FB were triggering riots and they had not established a system in advance to accurately target and remove inflammatory content. People were dying and yet FB did nothing.

In fact they had only one person who spoke Burmese in the operations team. "He was located in Dublin and he wasn't on even on staff, to resolve all the hate speech roiling Myanmar." Not in the same time zone. Just to add salt to the wound Goog translate didn't do Burmese.

Community Standards was never posted in Burmese, "so it was impossible for anyone to know what's allowed and what isn't."

"Basic architecture of the site- the like button and most importantly the reporting button that you use to alert FB to problematic content- is not in Burmese." "And - biggest and most surprising of all- FB is incompatible with the Burmese language."

"In addition Myanmar is one of the few countries that doesn't run on Unicode."
"As a result, if you're in Myanmar, you can type a post on FB and read them as recognizable Burmese characters. But for anyone outside of Myanmar, these letters are just unreadable jumble.
How do you moderate the content when you can't read it?"

They could have easily solved this problem but no one had prioritized this, so engineering doesn't do anything about it.

"The official FB app was unavailable for download in Myanmar" so what were they to do? They started using 'fake' FB apps. So when someone would clicked on a button to report a problem nothing happened.
FB senior management still did nothing.

Sarah had to resort to setting up clandestine meetings with groups in Myanmar to gather information. She even set up secret FB groups where these groups could communicate with her and her team.

Meanwhile the country was heading into an election and mysteriously liberal groups were removed from FB. The opposing junta started arresting opposing group members.

"After the election, the hate speech and fake news on FB continue, worse than we have seen in any other country."
They never should have fired Sarah.

That takes us to page 353.

Touche. There are copies of her book in circulation, so there is no way to censor that. I'm really interested in what testimony will come out during Hawley's subcommittee investigating her whistleblower accusations.
By censoring her book they peeked their curiosity.

Reading from the book- she outlines how they prepared for their last testimony. They take advantage of the fact the senators do not know the "right" questions to ask. She also makes clear that they have no problem just lying because there never are any consequences from doing so.
So I guess we will have to wait and see.

I would have thought someone at FB would have at least explored the reality that their "control" of "conversations" is unsustainable...
as they apply it, it can only be effective in a very short term.

Clearly they can't do it AND hide it...

More importantly, I hate to say it, (and I may be wrong) but - especially at a local scale - they are not smart enough to pull it off.
I hate to say it because those morons seem to take that as a challenge... and get paid to try...
