Ethiopia, where Tedros hails from, has an outbreak of Marburg.

They've identified 17 cases. Sniff

Page 90 in our current book-
"During the decade prior to the West Africa epidemic, a Canadian vaccine able to protect 100 percent of experimentally infected macaques just sat on the shelf. So did promising therapies like ZMapp."

"These were as yet unproven in humans, in large part because as one pundit termed 'Ebolanomics': there was scant interest in testing, developing, and marketing therapies for a disease affecting mostly rural Africans."

Makes one wonder if there is a therapy or vaccine for Marburg just sitting around.
I went and saw the movie "Nuremberg" yesterday. It is a must see but as usual hardly anyone there. It has some tough competition since Wicked 2 is playing at the same time. The ending has me wondering.

 Wow
Chapter 3.
Page 101. These people are crazy.com.

Just to give some context- Farmer is interviewing a young man who had recovered from Ebola. Two things that he told him stuck with Farmer. One was his concern about the ABC [ Avoid Body Contact] campaign in Sierra Leone.

"The second involved the number [23]."
"Ibrahim repeated just the number, [23]."< line 8.

This number apparently represented how many family members contracted Ebola and died.

Line 22- "secret societies".

In James Comey's book "A Higher Loyalty" there was one of those weird lines on the bottom of  page 101.

Page 114- "I kept thinking of the number 23- as in 23 dead.- and was determined to grasp Ibrahim's accounting."

Ibrahim's and his 23 dead family members inspired Farmer to write this book.

Looking at the timeline the Ebola outbreak must have been gaining traction during Ramadan which started June 28 and ended July 28, 2014.

When I see #28 -
Page 125 -"In a devastating story published on November 28 in the New York Times..."

Page 131- "On December 28, 2014, the day Mariatu was admitted..."

Page 143, Line 16-The country code for Sierra Leone is [232].

I keyed in July 28, lining up with the end of Ramadan and the start of Ebola.

clip-
This is not a game.
Humanity is at stake.
It is monstrous what they have done.

Here is Paul Farmer and other international "supposed" experts staying in a hotel in Freeport dining in a luxurious restaurant while the people live in extreme poverty. They invited some Ebola survivors to join them. They didn't know what to order because they were unfamiliar with the food items on the menu.

No offer of assistance to help them recover.

The ABC campaign was a mess. Can you imagine how confused the people were with such messaging? In the villages people were dying and they were told it was illegal to pick up the bodies or bury them.
They were supposed to call for an Ebola ambulance but none ever came. Those bodies would just stack up and in that heat they would decay and cause other illnesses. So of course they had to deal with them. Why weren't they given information about how to safely handle the bodies Question

This is weird.

Ibrahim spoke to Farmer about volunteering to care for patients suffering from Ebola since he had recovered from it, and Farmer and the other experts declined his services using some strange logic that it would cause trauma. Also that he had to be a trained medical professional.
He could have been used in some capacity, since so many medical professionals had died or were ill.
One doesn't need to be a medical expert to clean or spray chlorine.

I get a strong sense that there was a lot of practice going on.

Here's another example- The response became militarized. Checkpoints were set up to stop people from returning or leaving their villages.
Laws were enacted that made it illegal to bury their dead if they died from Ebola. The public was informed daily about the number of new cases. FEAR.
There were stockouts of medical supplies, power shortages, shortages of food and many hospitals were formally closed. There were incinerators to burn medical waste but they didn't work, so it was just dumped next to it.

People were told they had to call for an Ebola ambulance to pick them up if they contracted Ebola, which of course never arrived.

Even the timing is suspect. People would have been weakened after fasting for a month so more prone to contracting it.

What is very disturbing is that there was no advice given as to what to do or take if one became ill.
At a minimum staying hydrated and seeking help early.
This could mean something-

Wow

On a hunch I skipped ahead to Billy's favorite #- page 230.

Farmer is delving into all the armed conflict that was responsible for the lack of medical infrastructure.
Line 11 "were for exterminating the Africans."

Line 25 "The parlay began on February 23, 1857."

I'm finally into chapter 4 which starts with this-

"History rounds off skeletons to the nearest zero.
[A thousand and one] is still only a thousand.
That one seems never to have existed.
Wislawa Szymborska
"Starvation Camp Near Jasio" 1962

This is some heavy reading.

Page 151 "For 17 years, Sierra Leone was led by Siaka Steven, a corrupt, self-serving autocrat who had revised the constitution to keep himself in power- with a one party state."

This explains why the people are in such abject poverty.

"International financial institutions had made aid to Sierra Leone dependent upon the government adopting policies that discouraged public investments in education, healthcare, and other social services.
As a result all cost were passed to the families."

Meanwhile the country is rich in diamonds and any profits are not passed on to the public.

They have to pay to attend school, write exams, healthcare and rice became much more expensive because there were no long any government subsidies. Looks like the whole point is to keep them poor, uneducated, and unhealthy.

Monitoring mortality and cause of death, a new twist on healthcare.

Farmer describes children recovering from Ebola in a hospital, in some cases they were the only remaining survivors of their families. This leaves one wondering where these children are now.

This is weird-
August 28, 2015 a women died of Ebola in Sella Kalta. The governments response was to ring fence the settlement. They then discovered that a woman was missing that had been with the deceased.
No one knew where she went so they put her husband in jail.

They ordered the people to quarantine in their homes. I'm trying to envision this. Most of the houses had only a couple of rooms occupied by many children and adults. The places didn't have electricity or running water. They were to remain there for three weeks Question

If someone was to come down with it everyone in the house would contract it and with the area ringed off who would come and get the ill or the bodies Question

"According to the WHO the quarantine had the problematic effect of keeping them from their field during the growing season."

Meanwhile in other villages they were told to "avoid the hospitals and clinics  but at the same time to report to them."

The death toll must have been much higher than stated because according to Farmer Lassa fever was circulating at the same time.

This book is important because this gives us the playbook on the different strategies they planned to deploy.

One feature that stands out is the issuance of certificates when the person was cured of Ebola. I suspect they were being issued to try and help overcome the stigma associated with it. Even if recovered they faced other chronic health issues ranging from blindness, seizures and more.

What I find very puzzling is that they were not allowing those cured, suggesting immune now, to assist in helping in the Ebola units. I suspect that seeing only people in the biosafety gear would be frightening vs seeing a friendly recovered person would instill hope.
