Quote: The far-right party of Marine Le Pen, which is on course to trounce French President Emmanuel Macron’s group in this year’s European elections, said it will end cooperation with Alternative for Germany in the next European Parliament following Nazi-related statements.
The decision follows controversy over comments made by the AfD’s lead candidate, Maximilian Krah, regarding crimes by the Nazi party’s Waffen-SS in World War II, in an interview with the Italian paper La Repubblica. Krah has already been under pressure after his assistant in the EU parliament was charged with spying for China.
The vice-president of Le Pen’s National Rally, Louis Aliot, said Tuesday that the party will no longer work with the AfD within the Identity and Democracy, or ID, EU parliament group. “We clearly don’t have the same vision of the world,” he said in an interview.
The decision by the National Rally — RN in French — to break-up with AfD was first reported by Liberation. The French far-right is leading polls with a double digit margin ahead of the EU election in June.

The head of the AfD's list in the polls, Maximilian Krah, had said in a weekend interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica that someone who had been a member of the SS was "not automatically a criminal".
"We had frank discussions" with the AfD, said Loubet. "Lessons were not learned so we are taking the consequences," he said, adding Bardella had taken the decision in the afternoon.
The RN and AfD had been the key members of an EU parliament group called Identity and Democracy that also included several other European far-right parties.
Krah has been at the centre of numerous controversies with investigators this month searching his Brussels office as part of a probe into an aide who is suspected of spying for China.
