This is one of my favorite songs, thanks for sharing it - I didn't listen to it for awhile.

I was always kind of torn over this song.

No complaints, I find it beautiful (as well as beautifully performed by Ms. Lauper.)

But I thought the song, (on first hearing) was about a display of compassion for those who, solely by their uniqueness or difference, are treated poorly. 
Encouraging them to bring the truth of themselves first, before taking on the manufactured shame others might bring.

I didn't register "gay"... but somehow that seems the only context in which it surfaces anymore...

I understand where you come from, and it is sad when people do not use their own imagination when listening to music. 

I am not a person who is controlled by what other people think about a piece of music. I let my own imagination open completely along with my feelings. 

Personally, I let people perceive music, and music lyrics as they want - the problem is that most people do not have their own perception (they have a brain washed perception).

It is healthy to use our own mind to think instead of just being fed what to think.
