Thanks for the good advice, I was diligently removing the lint very often and collecting it as a fire starter. If I put wads of it back in there will the fairies give me back my socks?

if you are nice they may hide them back in the corner of a fitted sheet, with the dust bunnies under the bed, inside a pillow case, in the leg of your jeans, or in a bottom drawer somewhere, but they are both mercurial and inscrutable, so there is no telling for sure

I now buy double the socks so if I buy three pairs and one goes missing, I can match it with the remaining five. ha ha

I am not above wearing mismatched socks, just saying. I give up.

You bought new socks and didn't leave a pair out for the Sock Fairy ?

And you'd better feed them proper, or soon they go after the more expensive stuff, the underwear.   I've tried fooling them by putting the socks in a mesh bag.   Doesn't work.   They either tear the bag, or render your socks into a congealed mess that require rewashing.   So far, I've not discovered any burnt offerings nor incantations that repel them.    I have discovered that they lurve Red Twizzlers.   I've had limited success with leaving an opened package of Twizzlers near the clothes washer.   

They can't help themselves, though.   They are sock vampyres.   They don't seem to like wool socks as much as fine rayon or nylon, but all of those pale in comparison to their true love:  Cotton crew athletic socks.
