As to the Police's job, well uniformed Police, which is who would have attended, don't generally Police social media, as far as im aware.

If anything, that would be the job of the likes of CID.

Protect themselves against unarmed folk, like the guy and his sister?

Using a knife and an axe in "self defence" against a supposed unarmed assailant is not a defence likely to succeed.

No one's common assault, and the other a serious assault, possibly to endangerment of life, severe injury, and/or disfigurement.

Because that's what happens when you hit or stab a person with a kitchen knife or axe.
