This is the water filtration system I am working on right now to construct - just waiting for family members to get me free food grade restaurant buckets and lots of 'em. I think I will not bother with installing a water spigot - keeping it simple. I will be buying clean sand and pebbles so I don't have to go to the trouble of boiling anything.
I will be buying organic hardwood charcoal from the hardware store and grind it up, then activate it via a 25% lemon juice in water (ratio of 1:25 lemon juice to water, from my jarred lemons in salt brine) to make a paste, let it dry, then rinse it, then bake it (via oven or fire or BBQ with and without briquettes) at 250 degrees for 30 minutes, then store it in an airtight container (probably in one of those food grade buckets).
This is the easiest bucket filtration system I've seen so far, for those who are interested.
