THIS IS NOT A LEFT VS RIGHT/DEM VS REP DISCUSSION. PLEASE DO NTO TURN IT INTO THAT
Too many politicians have grown accustom to being on the taxpayer teat and have become like a tick that has buried itself in the skin of the US and refuses to let go. Politics was never meant to be this life long "career" that all of these ancient beings have turned it into. It was, and still has always been intended to be, a public service to the country.
Here are some suggestions I, and plenty of other people, have to remedy the "swamp". (I know almost none, if any, of these will actually ever happen. But, one can have hope)
1. Term limits - Nobody needs to spend 40+ years making laws that will only ever benefit them and fill their pockets. Congress and the Senate will follow the same term limits as the president, you get 2 terms of 4 years, that is all. I would even let them go to a "no term limit, but you could not serve more than 2, 4 year terms consecutively", but I would prefer term limits be a hard fast idea.
2. Salary - There is no reason that a "public servant" should go from a net worth of $100k to $100 million in a 2-4 year term in office. Their salary should be based on the average salary from their district. No more, no less.
3. Shutdowns - Anytime a shutdown occurs because nobody can agree on a budget, nobody can run for re-election, their tenure is over. Also, when the government is shutdown, their paychecks stop, without back pay. (They caused the shutdown, they should not be rewarded for it) their pay automatically goes to a fund for the military and other essential government jobs that don't get paid during a shutdown.
4. No Stocks - we are already mostly there with the PELOSI Act but this should have been something that went into affect decades ago.
5. 9-5 Jobs - You are only paid for time you spend in session in DC, or working in your district, you are not to earn a salary while you are not working. I don't get paid for not going to work, neither do you.
6. Armed security - If you are so hard fast that the average US citizen is not legally allowed to own a firearm, because "nobody needs an AR15 for self defense", you are no longer allowed to have armed security at your disposal. Your security team can carry OC Spray and stun guns, but no firearms of any kind are allowed. (You are to live what you preach)
7. Frivolous Impeachments - If you decide, like Rep. Al Green, to spend every waking second of your congressional term trying to impeach a president, all because he hurt your feelings or you don't agree with him, you are to be removed form congress and barred from ever serving again. You are wasting everyone's time and our taxpayer dollars to go after your personal vendetta (leave that to Hugo Weaving).
