Some believed:

- the government wasn't giving free healthcare to illegals.

Of course they heard, and believed that... but from whom?
Over and over, as information informing the citizenry.

I see a pattern too.

As for the "taking a knee" thing, I always equated it to 'tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree' kind of thing.... is it still 'meaningful' now?

You know, I was pondering why immigration is such a cause célèbre for the left. Is it merely empathy? I don't think so. They don't like the idea that, without any other law being broken, the government knows quite well where illegals are, and has sufficient evidence to move in and enforce the law. They call that 'fascism'. Why? They don't seem to really mind being tracked and targeted by online advertisements. They know their data is being collected for that. Why the objection to efficient law enforcement? Because, guess what: the government also has all the data it needs to know when you're breaking traffic laws, cheating on your taxes, using illegal drugs, and a host of other "minor" crimes.

The immigrants are a projection. These people are scofflaws. They don't like the idea that they could be caught. They like feeling like they're immune, because they're "good people". That's why they don't push to actually change the laws, so they can still be gleeful when they are selectively enforced against their enemies. It's hypocrisy.
