It appears Trump and/or his admin. used other economists' papers to justify tariffs, but those economists are outraged as he is misrepresenting their theoretical papers.

Quote:Another economist cited by Trump to justify tariffs hits out: ‘It’s outrageous. They’re causing a recession’The associate professor is one of many experts cited by the White House who is now criticizing Trump’s sweeping tariff hikes.

But Pujolas has said that there is a “huge gap between my study and what the White House is doing. It’s an outrage”.

On the blog Nothing is Free he also pointed out “the gain from a tariff comes only at the cost of impoverishing our neighbors; if our neighbors play it tit-for-tat, we (almost always) end up blind.”

Pujolas isn’t the only person cited by Trump to have criticized the President’s economic policies. University of Chicago Economics Professor Brett Neiman, formerly a Biden administration Treasury official, said the White House had got the tariff rates “very wrong.”

Now we are at 125% tariff levied against us from China and 145% against China. Xi isn't blinking despite what Trump says.  Lol Lol Lol  In other news, an investor we had lined up for our next expansion has dropped out, stating a volatile market and uncertain future as mixed messages are being sent out from this administration. Funding was there, now it's not. Already had a lease signed and now have to figure out how to back out of it without too many penalties. Super happy for MTG who now has a net worth of 38 million thanks to "good timing on stock purchases" though. Somebody is winning.....

I can't see Xi backing down on this.

Trump may have to back down. Wonder who he might blame, if he does?
I now know why I am called a grown up. Every time I get up I groan.

China's feeling the hurt already ... they have 9 months till they virtually shut down for Chinese New Year

saying this is worse than the pandemic

Quote:Apr 9, 2025 ✪ Members first on April 9, 2025 #chinaobserverOn April 2, US President Donald Trump announced a new round of global base tariffs, raising rates on dozens of countries. At the time of the announcement, the actual tariff rate for China stood at 34%. In response, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) announced on April 4 that it would impose a matching 34% tariff on all goods imported from the US. Trump then warned that he may raise tariffs on China by another 50%. The CCP responded by saying it’s ready to fight to the end. While the Chinese government is showing a tough stance, many businesses in China are already feeling the pain. On April 7, a Tiktoker filmed a clothing factory that had shut down and said the textile industry is in serious trouble. All the machines in his own factory are about to stop. He said this year is going to be incredibly tough.

Are we going to look back and say Clinton was an economic genius? In the 90s he gave Most Favoured Nation trading status to China, prompting them to reconfigure their entire economy. They enjoyed a few decades of prosperity, in return for becoming beholden to the market of the United States for their economic health. Clinton got them to write a cheque they thought would never be cashed. But Trump has, riding on Clinton's coattails. What genius! He really knew how to play 47D chess, that boy from Arkansas.

Mr Bill played flirty flirty with China...

Quote:During the 1996 election, the Clinton campaign faced scrutiny over illegal contributions linked to Chinese sources, notably involving figures like Ng Lap Seng and Charlie Trie. These contributions were part of a broader effort by China to influence U.S. politics, leading to investigations but ultimately no legal repercussions for Clinton or Gore.

During Bill Clinton's presidency, there were significant concerns regarding the transfer of missile technology to China, particularly related to U.S. satellite exports. Investigations revealed that U.S. firms may have provided expertise that could enhance China's ballistic missile and space programs, raising national security alarms in Congress.

Estimates from media outlets suggest that from 2009 to 2013, donations from individuals and organizations with ties to foreign governments, including China, totaled between $34 million and $68 million, but specific breakdowns for China were not provided Donors Tied to Foreign Governments Gave Millions to Clinton Foundation | Philanthropy news | PND. This range includes contributions from various countries, making it difficult to isolate Chinese donations beyond the known cases of Rilin Enterprises and Alibaba.
