Is depression actually an overactive brain?

We may enter that phase through many ways, and in the same way I suppose there are many ways of getting out of it, but they are all specific to that person and to the way they entered that phase. "Good news" may not even register as such for someone depressed, they are just "news" they see as irrelevant for their situation.

From what I have seen (not in myself, as I was never affected by depression to need medication, or at least to be noticed as needing medication), some medication may help people see some of the "exits", but they need to choose which one and make the decision to exit.

It's a complex thing.

It is interesting you mention it being a 'phase' for some people. I think my 'phase' was the 'mid-life crisis phase' which had me facing down the deep black hole and trying to figure out whether to jump in and to simply 'pick up my marbles, stop playing the game, and walk away for some self care without any responsibilities' where others can do all the hard work required. But then my upbringing kicked in and I pulled up my bootstraps and got on with what needed to be done in life. Instead of choosing the easy way out to self care, I chose to harden myself to life's hardships and cruelty. But my self care did actually begin during that time because I then also started putting myself first and/or rewarding myself now and again whereas before I put everyone else ahead of my needs.

I treat myself often now, but then my obligations in life are few now and I do try to embrace humor more often and fit it into my day.

I also find words of wisdom are all around us, in religious sayings, koans, etc. Meditation and calming the mind work wonders...even counting to 10 works wonders. But 'don't sweat it' or 'don't worry about things that you cannot control' are my recent go to modes of being. I have many memes of the elderly and their not giving a f**k sayings, but I don't post them here, they are just for me to remind myself to not give a f**k about most of the nonsense I encounter out there.

When I was 5 years old I had to go to the hospital because of my first big asthma attack, so since then I noticed that there are some things we can control and other things we cannot, and both have consequences, so I stopped worrying too much about those I can't control.

That was 58 years ago and it's still working for me. Smile

I too was hospitalized for what they thought was an asthma attack at perhaps 3 or 4 years old (so late '50s) and back then children were to be seen and not heard.

Nobody explained to me why I was there in the hospital and why my parents could not stay with me and left me behind there with strangers because they did what they were told and never questioned authority.

Instead of getting better, I got worse with a very high fever where the doctor decided to just send me home because I was unresponsive to everyone there and also to the medicine to lower the fever. Once home, I started getting better I was told, but I now wonder if I would have allowed myself to just 'give up' and to succumb to the fever because of feelings of isolation and abandonment if I remained in that hospital environment.

I can say now I became overly self-sufficient because of that experience, which can be problematic in some respects.

I was a bright child then with no adult mentors to turn to for helping me navigate my world.

It's all bullshit mate - psychiatrists are pseudoscientists.

The absolute lack of evidence is a good indicator.

Prove me wrong MF!
