Second sleep," also known as biphasic sleep, refers to a historical practice of sleeping in two distinct phases, separated by a period of wakefulness, typically lasting an hour or two. This pattern was common before the Industrial Revolution and the widespread adoption of artificial lighting. During the waking period, people might engage in activities like prayer, reflection, writing, or socializing.
Yes we are still the same organism, so this whole 'eight hours uninterrupted sleep' is some BS sold by various companies.
We are naturally geared to two, 4 hour periods, give or take. Still .

I sleep 4hours at night, doesn't really matter what time. If go to bed at 10 I wake up at 2. I also sleep 1-2 hours during the day if there is chance (no set time really), sometimes I will switch the cycle.

Ugh. I'm having similar sleep patterns, and I know it's not good for my health. I've tried CBD (which worked well until it suddenly didn't) and several sleeping pills (OTC and prescribed) and they don't really work. Whiskey does, but I am not sure that a nightly drink is a good answer, given that I have an intermittent cardiac arrythmia.
I do enjoy a good nap, but there are some days (like today) when nothing (music, diet, exercise, drugs, reading, meditation, etc) will bring on sleep. It's very frustrating.

A quick googling suggests that the answer is "cheap wine" (sold in a bag.) https://www.atlasobscura.com/foods/goon-sack-australia

I try to get six hours. It's not always in one go. On those very rare occasions where I go to sleep and squeeze out 8 or even 9 hours, I always wake up feeling good and rested and strong. I always try to analyze the various substances in which I have partaken that produced this glorious sleep, but haven't as yet figured out the precise mix of variables. I know that Magnesium Glycinate is a player, and I know that not eating after 6:00 p.m. is a variable. I tried THC oil, and it produced a good sleep, albeit with odd dreams and I would wake up not feeling rested, kind of groggy.
I know that a tot of good rum a couple of hours before bedtime is beneficial. I have tried Melatonin, and while it gets me to sleep, it doesn't seem to keep me asleep. I have tried Zopliclone, and it works GREAT to keep me asleep, but I wake up kind of loggy.
I think it helps to rest, regardless of whether you are asleep or not, especially if you are healing from a injury, which it seems I always am.

Not enough lately.
i used to get 8-9 hrs a night, but my sweet 20 yr old cat wakes me everyday now at anywhere from 3:39-4:40 to get her fresh water, even though she has fresh water in every room, but I adore her so I get up and get what she wants.
i miss my 8-9 so much though
In tune

I read about something like that in the Finnish culture. People would go sleep about nine, get up at one, then go visiting others and socialize for a few hours, then go home and go sleep for three to four more hours. Supposedly it worked really well. I do not know if they still do that, but some old Finns from the UP of Michigan used to do something similar. My stepfather used to do that and about ten other old people I knew. I did try that, but instead of just going visit someone, I would go on the computer for a couple of hours, and it is hard getting to sleep after all the light, especially when you are reading medical research articles. It is not socializing. My stepfather and mother would get up, make some light lunch, and then play cards for an hour with a cup of coffee. I suppose it could just be family socializing, now family socializing is texting on a phone and getting an answer five hours later.

It depends. If I'm babysitting then I only get like 2 hours of sleep because I'll be up all day until 4 or 4:30pm and then I have to be up by 6:30pm to go to work 8pm to 7am.
If it's just me sometimes i drink a lot of coffee when i get off work and stay up till 1 or 2pm and sometimes i go to bed by like 9am. I'm always up by 6:30pm so anywhere between 4 and 9 hours of sleep.
On my days off i do not like disturbing my daytime sleep schedule but i will sleep until midnight or 1am on my days off and then get up and stay up the rest of the night.
I watched a show on PBS a long long long very long time ago that I think had Wayne Dyer on it and he said that If you wake up, get up. Don't roll back over and go back to sleep, get up whenever you wake up. I don't remember WHY [I'm sure some spiritual reason] but it got stuck in my head so that's what I try and do. But I do roll over and go back to sleep on my days off because there is nothing better than waking up in a panic at 6:45pm thinking "oh crud I overslept" and then realizing it's my day off and I can go back to sleep.
When I worked days I was pretty militant about going to bed very early like 7pm because if I'm working during the day I need a good long time to wake up and drink coffee. So at that time i was getting about 8 hours a night but waking up at 4am to get ready and drink coffee.
I pretty much feel the same no matter how much sleep I get. Only if I go like a whole week of only getting a couple hours of sleep a day i experience sleep paralysis and weird dreams.
