You can't!

Kinda boring as it's impossible to gauge a topic and responses without a barometer! 

Swimming with shoes on.
Not knowing what coat to wear outside without a thermometer.
Watch a movie not knowing who the actors are.
Not knowing when to fill up your gas tank.
How would they score a ballgame without runs or points?
ETC.

Yes, but I’ve noticed that whatever the first person that rates the thread, that sticks. So say Joe Schmoe says it’s a one alien and he’s the first person in, that’s all the thread will ever be is one alien. I agree with the other posters. I like to give out recognition for good posts. I also sometimes gauge whether or not I’ll read something based on those ratings. Sometime I’m just not interested in the title or topic of a thread. But if I see major activity on it, I’ll click on it to see what all the hubbub is about. The current system feels like participation trophies.

I'll try to replicate that, but I've not seen that at all. The rating system should work normally, but I'll take a look.

Seeking validation through likes versus content is kind of what's wrong with the internet, no?

I'll figure out something. The rep system that I removed was ancient and confusing for most. When I find or come up with an alternative, it'll be announced. Right now though, mobile takes priority.
