Needless to say, I kept as far away from that situation as possible and tried not to look at them during all of this.
I wonder with all the prices rising to levels where we can't afford our usual fare, that violence will escalate in grocery stores due to hopelessness and generally people being pushed to the limit.
This here, you happen to look "wrong" at someone or they think that you are talking to them or whatever.
You may not have even been looking at them and may not have noticed them, until you get punched. If that were to happen to me, a beat down is coming. It is my belief that any physical violence is meant to put you in the hospital or the morgue, so it is now fair to use anything handy to beat them down and stomp them until they stop moving. If I get injured by some maniac, they will pay dearly if I have the opportunity, no mercy from me if I get punched. If I get jailed and have to go to court, at least I'm not grievously injured and in the hospital or dead, like they will be when they try physical violence on me.
I'm not some marital arts guys, I don't carry a weapon, and I am a non-violent person, but I will focus my rage in a most foul manner. I don't believe in "kicking them when they are down", but I will if they ask for it.

Well, I'm elderly and so any fightback would probably just escalate into more injury to me.
I keep scanning my environment and like I said after hearing their convo, I kept my head down and a good distance away from them.

I'm no spring chicken either, but I'm not going down without a fight. I've been beaten, broken and left on the road for dead, I survived. If I don't survive the next round, well, we all got to die sometime. If I leave remains behind when I die, my skeleton will look like I was a hard core rodeo cowboy in life.
You might want to carry a weapon, even something like pepper spray or a taser. I've been practicing with walking sticks and canes for self defense. I imagine other medical type things like even a walker, could be advantageous in a fight.

Approx 35 years ago I was grocery shopping with my then boyfriends daughters who were 4 and 6, and an old man out of nowhere pushed the younger one and yelled at her.
I lost my shit and was in his face it took me everything I had
not to punch him in his face. He took off running as I can go from sweet to military boot camp octave very easily.
The girls mother called me later giggling saying I didn’t have to do that. Trust me I did and I’m still mad at the rude asshole 35 years later.
Current day: I do my shopping early to avoid the people. I see people being very short fused. No patience and road rage is on the rise. I had a dude driving in back of me last week giving me the finger with both hands because I wasn’t going fast enough for him. I was in a 30mph limit 2 lane road that goes under a bridge, and what this yahoo prob didn’t know is there is usually an officer sitting right after the bridge.
I was really hoping the officer was there but he wasn’t that day. The driver had out of state plates RI (It’s always RI in MA) expired sticker and I’m willing to bet no insurance, couldn’t really get a description cause his dreads kept moving around as I’m sure he was cussing me out.
Finally the dude passes me and almost hit another car in the other lane, he had two lanes don’t why that so hard!
These days I don’t make eye contact, I don’t react and try to avoid but it is becoming harder.
In your case, that really came out of the blue. Hope the police charge the guy!
In tune

Self-defense cane/walking stick video. It's a thought though. (Have we really come to this point? (sad face))

You could turn the other cheek and offer to pay for his groceries.
Haha!

Just the act of paying for groceries can cause some people issues.
A couple of months ago I told the cashier that I will pay for my groceries using my debit card. A woman at the next cashier line, repeated what I said in a weird demeaning way and then stared at me. I looked at her and said "I don't answer to negativity", she said "I was just kidding" - a common gaslighting/manipulative response and nobody laughed.

I agree with those of you who suggest pressing charges...
Not for revenge for such a violent outburst, not for 'teaching lessons' to an unknown student...
but because 'peace' needs to be preserved...
and pressing charges is how we deal with this to eliminate any growing threat to people.
But I can't imagine (taken as a narrative the assailant provided) the sucker punch he endured discovering his mate was unfaithful... he must have been reeling and the rage he must have been nurturing... when he saw... the man who 'took' his mate.
I've always detested the 'sucker punch' strategy, and often seen it used and "explained as something else."
It's kind of pathetic... so I don't think I'd ever go there as a strategy.
This person struck you and claimed this thing....
then left....
no cameras...
(You know Im joking here....)
Are you sure you didn't get the "magic" black eye ... and this is all some elaborate cover story????

Yes, I’m a pretty calm person unless there’s a child involved, then the Lion in me comes out!
