It's total bullshit. Many are claiming tariffs. However, all the products I've seen spike recently, were American made. $8 fucking dollars for 8 ounces of whipped cream cheese. $12.99 ON SALE for a dozen eggs - BULLSHIT!

Greedflation pure and simple.

The Russia Ukraine conflict drove prices through the roof. All by design of course.

The commandeering of the energy market by the US and Western companies affected everything.

Food banks to fill in.

Oh, but wait -- Trump closed the food banks.

Is the packaging American made?

Who's working in the packing plant for low wages?

Are the ingredients local?
Can't tell you how many things I've seen that say -- "Assembled in America".

How much has feed for the animals risen?  Is that grain imported?

Cost of water?

Lot's of factors.

I am surprised the usual suspects that went absolutely bat shit crazy when food prices went up are not in here crying wolf.
These past few months I have made huge strides in cost reduction for my kitchen. And really learning how to do more than lighting coals and turning knobs.

Holy Jesus where are you shopping ?

I'm getting a carton of 18 eggs for less than $4 and a dozen for a little more than $2 and that's at Wal Mart.

How much are the basics in the US?

We haven't really seen much change when it comes to the basics especially when they're in season (UK)

How much are a couple pounds of onions (nearly a KG) or carrots, potatoes etc?

Eggs are still ridiculous prices over here but generally basic ingredients haven't increased all that much, between 5-25%. 500g of mince is about £5 at a supermarket which is about 25% increase but chicken hasn't went up for a while now.

I'm finding I'm actually saving money these days by shopping deals or shopping via various companies like just eat or deliveroo who typically have half-price grocery days, on those days I can get all the basics that I've mentioned, like onions etc half price, that includes meat... Not sure how they do it tbh because the shelf life is the same as going in-store or ordering via their own apps.

Cooking from scratch is the way forward but that's pointless if you're paying $6 for couple pounds of onions.

Where I live, it is not only prices, but availability of relatively normal things;  we haven't seen cottage cheese for months.   No biggie, we'll live.   The prices and availability started rising for us in 2022 or so.   Beef became unaffordable.   I live in the Caribbean.

I cook in bulk, and save lots of money.   When you say a "batch" of salsa, are you talking a couple jars or a couple gallons?   My family likes Tomatillo sauce, and I grow my own cilantro.   My mother grows tomatillos and scotch bonnet peppers and other stuff.    So, when I gear up to make Salsa Verde, I take a whole day and make a couple gallons, and pressure cook them in quart Ball or Atlas glass jars.   In doing so, I will make a gallon for about $12.00 USD.   It has been my practice for several years to cook in bulk on Sunday, and freeze it.   Tomorrow I am making three meat loaves; 1/2 to eat with accompanying treats, the other half for sandwitches, and the other two loaves for down the road.   I was able to buy a 12 lb. ground beef round for $28.00.   That will go a long way for my family.    I purchase local eggs for about $7.00 USD/dozen.   I could keep chickens, but I dislike the noisy bastards.   We do eat quite a bit of feral chickens.
