Deny Ignorance?
#1
I first want to say this thread will not get many likes I'm sure. I've was a member of ATS for years and sad to see it was defunct when tried to sign in a year later. I stayed on the skeptical side and posted such. There were a few members; mirageman, Abitraguer, Jim Oberg who seem to be with me as the few skeptics. Many believers in this phenomenon with some ugly retorts from some too. I stayed away from entertaining that nonsense. Hopefully this thread won't be deleted as I've always wanted to create the skeptical view for the average person who typically only hears the $en$ationlized side and who won't come across skeptism unless searching. This follows with the "Deny Ignorance" motto or mantra. BTW I have a deeper foundation for the reason I dont believe, not just a "oh they don't exist" with a wide sweeping of my hand because "I just do." I have a channel debunking few cases right now that I have many more that I created that might make people think twice l, hope. It's below. I start with Betty and Barney Hill:

Taking on a skeptical stance is not the same as taking on a debunking stance.

Great to see a skeptic here! I don't believe in the Barney Hill story nor Roswell or Rendlesham and that's just for starters.

In this day and age, some skepticism is important in navigating the information wars going on. The only dumb question is the one never asked.

Keep your critical thinking working along the way when trying to navigate ignorance. It does suck being wrong, but it does open up a new, clearer direction when we can acknowledge our mistakes and find those hard, solid facts to build a more accurate perception of reality on.

I found ATS because I was searching for more info on the "guardian UFO" thing and one thing that came up was Mirageman's post about the unsolved mysteries episode! Is that person on DI? I wonder? Those write ups were so good i was sad to get through them all honestly.

I am very skeptical too.

When I look at a case, I try to do it with available facts, as in what is said or shown first-hand by the claimants or people directly involved. Everyone has an opinion and can assume. What is important is sharing EVERY angle of an incident and not just the exciting profit making side which will always unfortunately win out by promoters. Seeing everything, then and only then coming to your own conclusions.

Debunking by definition is being skeptical because it's exposing BOTH sides and the 100% truth and not immediately jumping aboard the one sided UFO/alien train which is done far too often. Listen to what is said by an unbiased ear from both sides. Why always hear the media profit making side only?

I started being a sceptic when I was 9 years old and start doubting what was said in church (I used to go to church with my grandmother, on Sunday morning), then about most everything, because I think that blindly believing anything is not the best way to get closer to the truth, whatever it may be.

To me, the point of view of a blind believer is the same as the point of view of a blind debunker, just from opposite sides.

Yes, there are many interesting cases (either about UFOs or about any other unexplained phenomena), but that doesn't mean they are fake or that they are exactly as the witnesses think they saw, so investigation without any bias is the best way of getting closer to the truth.

PS: nice to see another former ATS member here, welcome. Smile

I'm a skeptic, I have learned many decades ago that you cannot believe half of what you hear and a quarter of what you see.  Back in the sixties, my father told me this and I have learned to work with this for over sixty years.  He may not have been very book smart, but he had lots of common sense.

Lots of times I just kept my mouth shut till I gained enough info and found that there was much more to the event than was originally known.

Never jump to judge someone till you have all the facts.

Things have changed now, you cannot believe a quarter of what you hear or read, even on the news, and you cannot believe half of what you see or think you are seeing.  So, his original saying is old insight, it does not apply at those original percentages anymore.

What bothers me is that we never hear 100% of the whole case. Like Betty and Barney Hill. I was skeptical of their case at first, but after hearing their inconsistencies in their story and especially after Dr. Simon's admission in his radio interview about their story which I never heard before researching, that should make people wonder and think. It's not just me some random guys opinion, but the actual doctor who hypnotized them opinion. Even Majorie Fishs final words about their star map.
Yeah, common sense blows book smarts out the window many times. You get an education and you're smarter than me in one subject, but not in common sense. We're born with and our entire life grows learning common sense, its not taught in a class.
