From the stairwell photos, they can see he has the rifle down his pants' leg and a cell phone in his pocket.

Given the camera's time stamp...they can very likely pick up, track his phone...and follow him.

Also...given he was walking/limping and sweating with the rifle down against his leg in 80 degree weather...the found gun should have plenty of his DNA on it.
