Hochel and Mamdani have officially laid down the foundation for child care expansion in New York City. This is how campaign promises are kept folks.

Excerpts from the transcript of an interview with Mamdani, Hochel and Summers (from NPR).
"KATHY HOCHUL: For decades, governors have promised some form of child care, but never delivered. And I'm here to say the era of empty promises ends with the two of us right here...
UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: Yeah.
HOCHUL: ...Right now."

"MAMDANI: So the first thing you do is you fix what is called as 3-K, child care for 3-year-olds. That has existed here in New York City, but what it's actually meant is a family in Flatbush, Brooklyn, is offered a seat only to find out that that seat is, in fact, in Astoria, Queens, and so they can't actually take the city up on that offer. So what this commitment today does, part of it is funding the fixes necessary to make child care for 3-year-olds a reality.
The second thing it does is start to develop child care for 2-year-olds. It begins with 2,000 children this fall, and then by the end of my first term, we will be delivering it to every single 2-year-old across New York City. In the second term, we would then extend this child care for children younger than that to fulfill our campaign commitment of providing child care from children from the ages of 6 weeks to 5 years of age. We are going to age down with our commitments each and every year."
"MAMDANI: So this stage of $1.21 billion from the state to our city is going to be funded through existing revenue. And what it's going to do is allow us to fulfill this commitment and stagger it through the stages because you're not just looking for additional revenue. You're also looking to build out an apparatus and an infrastructure, and that's what we're going to do over these next four years, fulfilling it by providing child care to each and every 2-year-old across the city."
