And well I guess everyone knows what "flamewar" is, that's when you get hot and bothered and the gif with the kids playing football comes out! But to "spiral" is sort of newish (I guess??) slang that means... um, well here is what AI says!

So there. Wait, wasn't this mean to be a thread about avoiding technology (at least in part)? Oops! I have use AI, oh the irony!

(Please excuse too many exclamation points I have had much coffee!)

It's difficult to separate what is really going on here.

What are these 'evils' the Taliban speaks of?

Women educating themselves online, evils?

Other worldviews educating the lower echelons of men there who may present dissent to the top, evils?

Here is a place that I bet doesn't have WiFi:

https://www.mbzc.org/what-we-offer/

It's a Zen Center! You go up a mountain and sit there. There is also chanting and lessons and such.

But I will need the internet to fact check if they got the Zen koans correct?

Porn. They probably mean porn.

But yeah also cultural protectionism very likely.

To assume the mindset of searching for correctness is to still be trapped in the confusion of duality. Is the koan right or wrong? Yes. And no. Followed by a beatific smile that better not make you want to slap their smug face.

I mean, I was under the impression that this was a topic regarding Afghanistan, religion, tribal culture in general, and the raging against potentially differing views... And yet, somehow? You want to make it about... men?

Forgive me, but it is starting to seem like you have an agenda.

The Taliban is a religious and patriarch society.

Mavis Leno has (had) been the chair of the Feminist Majority Foundation's Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan since 1997. In 1999, Leno and her husband donated $100,000 to the organization, to further the cause of educating the public about the plight of Afghan women under the Taliban.

Men losing freedom -- as in:  Loss of business due to inability to communicate needs/financial transactions, etc. Because all that is now done by modern technology -- which has been cut off.

Correlation -- women cut off from education.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Significant to me. How do they like it?

Hopefully -- this cut off will have the opposite effect from the Taliban's intent -- as men are affected.

Agree.  They probably do mean porn, and the more serious sin -- seeing what the rest of the free world can talk about and do and enjoy.

I can't imagine what it is like to be born and raised in a repressive culture which dictates ideals and suppresses any semblance of personal freedom.   I grew up with religion in my life, but it wasn't a controlling factor.  It was offered as a suggested choice.

I'm guessing this action by the Taliban is also in response to Trump wanting to "get back" the Bagram military base;   if the Afghan people perceive that there is global support for them resisting the Taliban, that would be adverse to the Taliban.  I hope Trump doesn't get the bright idea of "liberating" them.   He has well enough irons in the fire.
