As it happened.
I was on the west coast (US), watching the early morning news as I was getting ready to drive to work..
First, there was a breaking news report of a fire at the WTC. Then came the intitial word that the fire, which was being televised by then, was thought to have been caused by a plane crashing into the tower.
Then things got totally chaotic.
There was a report of a plane being hijacked, unconfirmed at first. Then, as I remember, a report of a fire at the Pentagon. And finally....
As the reporter was talking,, with the camera on the burning tower, the second plane came into frame. I had just enough time to think "That's odd.. there shouldn't be a plane flying that close to that building, especially with the building on fire..",
When the second tower was hit, live, as I watched.
I knew, in that second, that this was an attack. My first thought was some kind of cyber attack, that the aircraft guidance systems had been hacked. But then word came out about multiple hijackings, and I realized when they said that a plane had hit the Pentagon as well, that it was a different kind of attack.
And that I was about to drive into a potential target.
You see, I was working for a State government agency at the time, and our office complex was large, isolated, very well defined, and less than 2 miles from a commercial cargo airport.
