9-11-2001 what time did you hear about it ?.

I was a high school student in 2001. I found out about 9/11 around 7 - 8 am on September 12, 2001, New Zealand time. Unusually, I didn't watch any Breakfast TV before heading to a nearby bus stop. Sitting on the bus, I heard about 9/11 on the radio. 

My commute took me into the Christchurch CBD. I walked through the old Cashel Mall, surrounded by an eerie silence, with no one else around.

I have a lil brush-with-9/11 story

I was invited by Audi of America to display some new cars at WTC Plaza on 9/11, but bailed out the last minute.

It was timed at noon, with an area roped off. It ended up the caravan stopped in NJ and could see the smoke, at a minimum.

My friend in NY was like, I can't believe you have a 9/11 story, but are from Philly.

I mean, it's not like I was part of the plot, but I was in that arena. It's kinda scary, regardless.

I did work many years ago for a banker who worked in the twin towers , They told me that the night before the attack that they had received a phone call telling them not to come in until midday due to local elections taking place! ! .

The old ATS was a goldmine of interesting photos and information from that time , especially the power being out and the emergency lighting being on and very early photography of the buildings with a crane on top yet they look hollow with no floors , which is one weird building technique . And for some reason I cannot upload to this site the pictures I have on this tablet .

Central time zone. My brother woke me up to see the 2nd plane hit. Like previous posters, thats when I knew we were under attack. i dont believe a plane hit the Pentagon nor do I believe passengers on the other plane took it down

I don't remember what time it was, but it was almost lunch time here in Portugal, and I was at the army historical archive, talking with the director (a colonel that was part of the Carnation Revolution), when someone came to the room we were in and said "you have to see this", so we all went to a room with a TV and had just arrived when the second plane hit.

The TV commentator was saying it was a repeat but then saw it wasn't and was speechless for a few moments. The archive director said "this is war".

Everybody knew 7 was going to collapse far ahead of time.

Were the firefights inside? No, why?

I was working alone, finishing the sheet rock in a house me and the crew had just built.   The crew was on the next job, surveying and setting the forms for the posts.   

I even remember the music.   I was playing Pat Metheny Group on my boombox, and standing on a rolling scaffold, zipping back and forth with my mud pan and my 10" knife.    

I heard honking and looked out the window and saw my Darlin' and the wife of the company owner in each of their vehicles.   I didn't believe them at first.   How could such a thing happen?  At that time, only the two Twin towers had been hit, and not yet collapsed.   They didn't yet know about the Pentagon, nor Shanksville.  

I tossed my equipment into a 5-gallon bucket and we went together to inform the rest of the crew, and then we drove to our house to watch the tv.   What a horrible day.  We were all in shock.  That afternoon we all got inebriated.   It didn't help much.   The next morning the crew were scattered all around the house, and I got up and made coffee and breakfast, and we didn't go back to work for two days.   

Those kind of moments, when the world takes a sharp turn, and you know you can never go back to that safe place again.

As I posted earlier, I saw the second plane hit just before I left for work that day.  I admit to have kept one eye on the sky for airliners where they shouldn't be.

The towers did not fall until after I and my colleagues had gotten to work.  As I also said before, we were in a government office building.

We spent that morning expecting at any moment to be the next to be attacked, until official word was received that we would be released to go home.  But we were released in sectional groups, rather than all at once,.

I assume to minimize the available target opportunities?


I will say that security at the main office (my work group was located at a satellite office, not generally disclosed to the public) was "on edge"..

Apparently it's the allied native shore patrol who pulled Sr out of the surf after being shot down.
