I was a big Pantera/Sepultura/Nirvana fan back in the 90s when i still had hair, if that counts...

I was into it when Black Sabbath was new.
Not so much anymore.

Yeah just the same, not so much anymore. Black Sabbath, Metallica, megadeath, Suicidal Tendencies and the offshoot Mike Muir even better. Motorhead. All amazng back in the day, think I'm in a different place these days, but love all music.

I was a fan 10 years before Metallica was formed.
It seemed to me that the later bands were just Black Sabbath wannabes.
My ex brother in law was a sound man for Ratt.
He did sound and lights on lots of bands though.
Got us backstage passes a lot and tickets galore.
ZZ Top, Kool and the Gang, the Who, Paul McCartney, Lynyrd Skynyrd.
A few others.

I have only heard dont fear the reaper and burnin for you. I really enjoy those songs, I should probably check out the rest of their stuff. But do they really count as metal??
I think Slayer counts as metal. I do enjoy the sounds of Slayer, especially the guitar work.

I also like how the "guitar work" of Slayer is "Okay, so fuck scales or tonality, just play whatever note, and excessively bend harmonics with the whammy bar."
I realize Slayer are legends, but it is sometimes TOO MUCH NOISE, and I have a high tolerance for that.
So here is unrelated cover... and I am sorry in advance, Iron Maiden fans.

I like it! I am not really any kind of authority on Metal but it sounds in there for me.

Thats interesting. I think I like Slayer because it reminds me of the maps I used to play on Doom back in the nineties. Maybe that is why the sound is so enjoyable to me. I have never played a guitar though so I cannot comment on whether it represents actual skill or just random chaotic strumming of the strings. Sounds like there is a pattern to me though.
