Suddenly, Lester wasn't so sure. He looked at Ana, she was a good girl alright, easy on the eye. But Lester knew the futility of putting all hope in a single dream. Here he was, all these years later and still, dreams of his father, full of hope and always waking to the nightmare of his face.
Lester wondered what was important about Ana's paperwork. She had never said what it was or how it would change her life. He wanted to know, he dreaded finding out. Lester wasn't a complicated man, he wrestled with complexities all day long. The booze had helped, bringing an end to acute and the thrill of the numb. He knew he would never go back on the bottle, he wanted life not oblivion but damn, he wished he could trust Ana's certainty.

Lester finally gave in. He said to Ana “I really don’t want to find this paperwork but I care about you so let’s do this!”
Ana said “Lester, after all that you have been through you really are a wonderful person.” Lesters face turned red as an apple. Lester cannot remember the last time he felt so good. Away they went to this house, they were both scared. Ana had a special combo with a key to a safe. Lester was thinking “what could be in this safe that would change our lives?”….
Be kind to everyone!
They opened the safe. Inside was an ancient looking book. It seemed to be bound in some sort of skin and the writing inside seemed to be in red ink.
"Necronomicon"... There were some old parchment scripts as well. Despite the hairs standing up on their heads, and a terrifying sense of dread that coldly gripped them, Lester picked up one of the parchments and began, haltingly, to read it aloud: 'Khandar Estrada Khandos, Thrubs Indactu, Nosfrandus, Khandar Dematos, Khandar. ..." To be continued....

Ana felt a sense of cold dread and begged Lester to stop, but he carried on reading the words on the parchment in a flat monotone voice, as if he was now possessed by something unspeakably evil.
The room got cold, the candles blew out, but Lester carried on reading the words on the parchment aloud.....

A vortex seemed to open up in the centre of the room.
Black light seemed to swirl and spin in a counterclockwise direction, as papers swirled in the disturbed air of this newly opened gateway. What looked like black square pillars, small floating obelisks, arranged in a circle, in midair in the vortex , started to spin faster and faster. around the centre point. Their individual 'spokes' became so blurred from movement that it was like an engine running in the centre of the room. Abruptly there was a BANG and an extremely bright flash of light as of lightning, and a smell of ozone and ...wet cardboard. Standing in the centre of the room was a freakishly large black dog.

Then there was a knock on the door.
Ana ran to the door and opened it. It was Dillinger. White as a sheet, riddled with bullet holes, yet still apparently standing. Weilding a chainsaw, which he fired up. He said " I told you I had a job for you." Stepping into the house he says: "Get out. Run. I'll take this from here"....

The hell hound sniffed the air. No sulphur, something sweet, like burnt butterscotch. And something even sweeter, fear. The woman, now frozen at the sight of the man at the door.
The men were looking at eachother. Lester looked the other man straight in the eye. He knew that look, seen it hundreds of times before, the eye of the killer. He sensed Ana, knew she was petrified. He squeezed her hand. She began to come to. Dillinger's gaze, for those split seconds, chilled Lester. A low growl came from inside the room and Lester felt foolish. He did not know he could read latin. He only knew it was latin because of the sisters. But that was another lifetime, a million years ago maybe. The hell hound understood the words, even if Lester did not. He looked the dog in it's killer eye and stepped aside for the advancing gangster who had shown such an interest in him, these last few days since arriving in Chicago.

![]() Lester call Dillinger by his street name “hey Jackrabbit, for all your crime I am remapping this world and you are not in it”. Lester found a gun in the old house and shot old Jackrabbit. Ana seemed relieved. She said “oh Lester you saved us from that chainsaw and that terrible man, you are amazing.” Lester dragged old Jackrabbit‘s shot up body out back and dug a massive hole, he tossed in the body, mixed four bags of cement he found in the garage added water and poof, Jackrabbit was gone. He went back inside and said to Ana “girl, we have to get out of here asap.” Lester found a 1932 motorcycle in the garage. Ana and Lester put on their helmets and zoomed off…

But, when they got to the bridge, the only way out across the gorge, the bridge was a mangled wreck.
No choice but to go back to the house. They barricaded themselves in. Tired and scared witless, they embraced eachother and enjoyed a brief respite from their terrifying ordeal. Only to be startled by the unmistakable sound of a chainsaw being fired up.....
