Who believes in the Rapture?

I read recently that Rapture was invented by the Protestants in the 1800s/
From what I was taught, we will know neither the time nor the place of the End.

I don't know, but people believe in the levels of Hell or Purgatory. They aren't in the Bible or any other holy script so I don't get it myself.

The way I understand Hell is it is the total absence of God.  
Which to me means it is a void.   Just nothingness.
So, the Void is a lot less dramatic to discuss then the Levels of Hell and Purgatory.

Slightly off topic... 

I believe many things are embellished to make the concept easier to hold on to.  
Such as the devil.  Is it a single entity in the same way that God is? Or is it a concept of evil that was born with free will?

This was basically what I understood too. Basically, burying a person was equivalate to dumping them in Hell, and allowing them to be eaten by animals and exposed allowed the departed to live again in the next life. Cremating the body was equivalent to offering them up as a sacrifice to the gods/God. 

The notion of Hell was an absence of everything, and when people died, they went to a version of Tartarus until they were judged and allowed to move on.
