Didn't it used to be "know thy enemy"?
I've always wanted to know what monsters were doing, to try to take control of the masses.
It's certainly not fear, nor paranoia.
It's educating oneself on what may be coming your way, preparing as best you can, then going about your life more educated.
What is wrong with that?
