Governments are stupid, but no government would risk losing its credibility by telling a tale so easily disproved by everyone from professional scientists down to backyard stargazers.
Would it though? They can’t even see a friggin planet that they know is out there in our own solar system somewhere. So maybe not. And what if it’s cloaked?
