Take children. Thousands. To live they have to produce results.

imagine a large underground cavern with monitoring station on one end a couple stories tall on huge springs. In front of it row after row of hundreds of cement coffins with small running lights on each the only meager break in the darkness. 

The coffins are each filled with salt water to become isolation tanks. The children shown one desiccated corpse rotting in one and told they will be left inside their units until they either produce results or die.

torture and drugs and mkultra mind twists at their worst, used on these children. Either produce or die. Not a matter of belief, but rather survival.

Pretty dark, but cool, but dark.
