Well, I kind of consider that the internet also, but I agree, yes they were.  Regardless of it it was before the www. (which I guess technically defines the 'web'), it was still an electronic internet like medium.

I had a (5) digit Compuserve account number!!  16000,xxxx  That's how old I am.  I was out there on all those BBS's you refer to.  Most people on Compuserve only had (6) digit account numbers like 225000,xxxx.  I think I signed up for Compuserve in like 1987, but was online with BBS's before that.  Heck, I can even remember reading the book...'The "Internet" for Dummies (what is the "Internet" really?)'
