More Glitches in the ATS Matrix
#11
Sounds like a design flaw on their part.  If you are seeing an error as indicated, the code isn't set up to handle exceptions very well and it's outputting the uncaught error.   WHY it's happening is anybody's guess.  SMTP mailers are always fun but have always been reliant on other endpoints for relay.  Something could be happening upstream which throws the error, exits the recovery method and leaves you stuck.

Hope you get it resolved

Thank you. I have no idea. I’m officially locked out on all devices as of 1pm today.

The issue I keep having with ATS (and everyone keeps telling me it's only me, but it doesn't happen anywhere else but ATS) is these delays were either a post won't load, or the site won't refresh.  I'll upload a post or a reply and it will just sit there and spin, then nothing happens and it eventually times out.  I'll do this 2-3 times before it loads; it's very noticable.  Same thing with refresh.

I know it's not my browser or my cache because I dump that and clear it completely every time I close my browser.  I also clear out all cookies every time also.  After studying this more carefully, I think it has something to do with another person making a post on the same thread (but this doesn't fully explain the refresh issue).  It's like there's a posting queue or something and it gets full, and once that happens any subsequent action gets biffed.  The strange part is, if this were the case then more people should notice it, not just me.

This glitch doesn't happen all the time, but it happens quite a bit (like about every 3rd or 4th action), and it's only on ATS.  Like here, for example, when I hit "Post Reply" it posts the acknowledgement screen instantly (less than 1 second).

And I know it's not my internet connection because we've upgraded to a different service and it's lightning fast now.  We can stream and even game with games like EVE (which is a bandwidth-intense game with all the graphics) with virtually zero latency.  My processor will choke on EVE before my connection chokes, but that's rare now too since I did some upgrades.

Try dumping everything when you close your browser.  That's what I do and it seems to work fine.  I've never had to change my password since I got back in.  But I have to login every time.  I think it may be cookie related.  I just set a rule where it dumps everything except for a couple selected sites I use for work (where I have multiple layers of MFA to deal with).  Everything else gets blown out every time close my browser.

I’ve seen the issues you speak of. The other day, I went to edit a post. It created an entirely new post when I hit the edit icon.

I’ve tried everything you mentioned. Cleared browsing history, cleared cookies, reset network settings. Nothing worked. When I still had access through my phone, I sent DTOM a PM. It’s been a few days and I haven’t heard anything back.

The problem this time is, it won’t even send me a password reset. After reading your post, I went and reset the network settings and deleted all cookies and website history on my iPad. That didn’t work either.

Im wondering if a mod manually sent me a reset to my email, if that might work.

Im completely locked out and banished to watching the white screen. AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH I HATE THE WHITE SCREEN!!!!

I forget if it was this thread or another but someone posted an smtp error they got when they tried to do something on ATS. The context of that error message is that the SMTP server is inaccessible. SMTP is used for sending mail. Either the SMTP service on the box is missing or down or the server it points to is down.

This is something someone with admin rights to the machine will need to address.

FWIW I had that exact same issue for YEARS and only on ATS and only when I was out on the West Coast. Numerous threads were brought up about it over the years and the management always denied there is any problem. The site basically stalls while loading. Sometimes certain elements don't load.

I'll tell you what I think it is... Some sort of MTU problem on an outbound route to the west that is not used for East Coast destinations. It will produce this exact behavior and only for those who's traffic crosses the affected link.

I have no desire to see ATS die.

Whatever happened in October presents way too much of a security risk for my taste.

Never going back unless something drastically - and durably - changes.

The whole thing is just sad.

I agree with you. I don't post there anymore and have no intention to, though once in a while I'll still go read but I'm fairly well convinced at this point the site is compromised. I'm surprised most people even entertained the idea of giving some random 3rd party your info in some random chatroom not officially related to ATS in order to regain access. No thanks! HUGE red flag!

I personally don't think ATS was hacked or anything of the sort. I think the seemingly unknown/shady org that bought the place has done this intentionally. I believe the actual goal is to kill the site.

It seems to me that maybe they wanted to see how many of the users are "real" or at least willing to continue posting... reset everyone's passwords, claim DB shenanigans, get them to contact you, Now, you have a full list of all the actual active membership of the site. I would even go so far as to say that perhaps the ownership is purposely making access difficult for certain parties they do not want posting there, hoping they'll leave of their own accord instead of being banned and signing up for a new account?

I vaguely recall a $300K number being passed around before the sale. If I had paid $300K for a site like ATS, I sure wouldn't be letting DB issues and mail server problems destroy my investment. So, the party who purchased it is either completely in over their head and has absolutely no idea how to admin the site, or the problems being experienced are intentional. I just don't see someone forking out that kind of money and then wasting it unless they intended to do so.

I have an interest in the site, but I will not pay $300K for a site that makes no profit. I wish, if nothing else, the ownership would at least release the message DB so that it can be saved and published elsewhere for the benefit of the community. I doubt this will ever happen. It would be pretty awesome if we had an ATS-II (DenyIgnorance?) that actually had the post history to be referred to. I suspect the current ownership there is planning to let ATS die on the vine. Just my two-sense here but I think the writing is clearly on the wall and has been for some time.

I’d like to do a test.

Does anyone have an ATS account they don’t care about?

I’m thinking the password reset feature is broken.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a sock account.  Lol  Otherwise I’d try it myself.

I avoid ATS like the plague... it's how I cope with being summarily expelled with no warning...

No sock accounts for me EVER.  Never have, never will.

I don’t blame you. However, I wouldn’t take it personally. I think the idiot started banning random well liked people, to piss everyone off, knowing he was on his way out.
