It's not just how cults work, it's how you produce them. Uncomfortable as it may be to hear, many spiritual groups performs the same rituals and the experience is guided by ideology.

But how can this be done?

First we need to know what to look for:

Besides if it was not a hoax everyone would be in an heightened uninhibited state.  A religious experience out of context manifests as acting crazy. Social media would be awash with people posting otherwise irrational behavior.
