What is the difference in Nixon Watergate and Obama Trump wiretap
#1
Stumbled over this on X.com while reading about Carter's State funeral and wanted the Deny Politics input

What is the difference between Nixon tapping the Democrats at Watergate and Obama approving the wiretap of Trump at the Trump Tower?

The difference is Nixon had a whole back room of government agencies that actually believed in Justice & the rule of law.  Obama, on the other hand, had an entire back room of government agencies primed to do everything BUT find guilt, and none of whom consider Justice nor the rule of law to be important.

That suggests Obama knew he was protected, whereas Nixon...

Just because one had accomplices

It still doesn't make the actions taken any less illegal, which is the larger point

The difference to me is the aftermath:
The furor, the press coverage, the legal battles fought.
All the President's Men
People went to jail.
Nixon resigned.

And here we are.

IMHO, the CTer in me, "THEY" needed Watergate to get rid of Nixon.

Well that was one of my thoughts now these types of events have become normalized

Without digesting the whole thread, I can say that people who remember Watergate can relate to an entire branch of government collapsing, if the event were to re-occur in the future.

Yep Nixon wanted out of Vietnam which pissed off the deep state big time.
Quote:WATERGATE FILES: Newly uncovered documents about former President Richard Nixon, the 'deep state,' and the Watergate scandal are put under the spotlight by longtime political advisor and Nixon campaign ally Roger Stone - and Stone unpacks the Nixon-CIA relationship, the JFK assassination, and more.

Ideology now trumps legality.

If you're breaking the law to benefit your ideology, then it is acceptable.

Just look at the illegal alien issue.
You must develop the ability to be disliked in order to free yourself from the prison of other people's opinions.

Don't you know? Nominally enforcing existing law makes you a Nazi. For immigration laws anyway. With regard to laws against illegal government wiretapping, enforcing those makes you a Russian asset or an anarchist.
