This is me in 1977. Six years old with a bowl cut. I walked to school uphill both ways in the snow. I figured out how to text on a rotary phone. Looks like I had a crooked eye!

I did my own bowl haircut and didn't talk to myself for days.
When I wasn't sporting the bowl haircut I must have been a good looking kid because one time at our school we were having a music festival and one of the top City newspaper photographers decided to take my picture (several) and splash them all over the Entertainment Section. As was usual back then (children should be seen and not heard) nobody told me what was going on, so when I got home the next day from school my mother, who read that particular newspaper, showed me and asked why didn't you tell me? Because some adults are f'd up I should have replied.

I didn't go to a barber until a couple of days before graduation. Yeah, wore the hat and tassel all through graduation, why they decided I needed a barber for that sort of makes me wonder about my parents sanity.
Back then my parents or aunt cut our hair, why pay someone to do haircuts. My sister never went to a hairdresser either, except for her senior prom I think. Our haircuts were decent and I learned to cut my own hair too when I got over fifteen, because I liked it a little longer and I could not convince my relatives to let me have longer hair. I was born in fifty five, and things were different back then. There were only a few hairdressers and a few barbers in our town, and there were three thousand or more people living there back then. The barbers did not get rich, but they had times that theey did make some cash. Usually before Christmas and Easter they were pretty busy and of course, when there were lots of weddings they had business...between the end of june and the end of october they had lots of weddings. My brother has a picture of me in a dress when I got talked into crossdressing by my sister and her friend when I was around ten. Nobody was supposed to see that picture, but my sister showed everyone and everyone laughed. That was around sixty five, I made a lousy girl. I got blackmailed with that picture plenty of times. When I was forced to go to the dances with my sister as a chaparone, she made sure I remembered she still had that picture, and I had to stay away from her at the dance.....there were other boys that I could talk to, because their older sisters also used those tactics to ditch them.

I have been saving this photo for a fiction story about my young archeological discoveries, but what the heck.
As a boomer kid in the early 60s, before getting my first fedora hat, I wandered far from home, like 5 miles or so. I was wearing a multi-colored horizontally striped shirt and kaki short pants with large pockets. We called them jungle pants because that's the sort of things we saw on Black and White TV movies about great white hunters and explorers. Butch haircuts were still in fashion back then because they were the easiest and fastest haircuts to give with clippers. So yeah, no hat and very short hair is my appearance that day. Anyways, the town I was born in had grown since the war. The one room school house had been abandoned in favor of multi campus elementary schools. But I knew where to find the derelict structure. Down where the old founders built it, before the town relocated to where the stage coach routes were easiest. So here is what I found inside. ![]() I think it may be classified as an important archeological find. I took the picture but not the artifact itself because that would be stealing. No museum has offered money for the photo however. Too bad.
There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people. - Commander William Adama
