US forecasts severe solar storm starting Thursday
#1
Aurora Borealis as far south as Alabama...

https://insiderpaper.com/us-forecasts-se...-thursday/

Quote:A massive ball of plasma and accompanying magnetic field ejected from the Sun is expected to strike Earth on Thursday morning, potentially triggering auroras as far south as Alabama, according to US forecasters.
It comes as the Sun approaches — or is possibly at — the peak of its 11-year cycle, when activity is heightened.
In May, the planet experienced its most powerful geomagnetic storms in two decades, producing colorful displays across night skies far from the poles.
“The current anticipation is that it is going to arrive tomorrow morning to midday, Eastern time, and perhaps continue on into the following day,” Shawn Dahl of the Space Weather Prediction Center told reporters at a briefing on Wednesday.
As the coronal mass ejection (CME) travels through space at 2.5 million miles (four million kilometers) an hour, the agency has put in place a level 4 geomagnetic storm watch (G4).
That is one level below the highest possible G5, seen in May — but the final outcome could be either below or above G4.
Better predictions aren’t possible until around 15-30 minutes before impact, when it crosses tracking satellites, a million miles from Earth.

Weren't there reports the sky in Florida was purple in some areas after the hurricane Milton  hit

Quote:=#ffffffPROTONS ARE RAINING DOWN ON EARTH: A strong (S3-class) solar radiation storm is underway today. In plain language, this means protons are raining down on Earth. The energetic particles are being accelerated toward our planet by the incoming CME described below. Passengers and crew onboard international flights over the poles may receive an elevated dose of radiation while this storm is in progress. Radiation storm alerts: SMS Text

=#ffffffNOAA and NASA models agree that the CME will strike our planet late on Oct. 10th. The impact could spark up to 12 hours of severe storming with naked-eye auroras visible in many US states and European countries. NOAA's detailed forecast has the storm crossing the boundary from Oct. 10th to Oct. 11th, involving both calendar dates

Yeah, I thought that was extremely low, I meant to include the original source that caught my interest. Im fully aware Bama and Florida are highly unlikely and felt the purple color before Milton was a cool add-in where we could expand to include other sky phenomena. As long as this thread isn't slogged down with responses. Cool

I wasn't disagreeing with you, I just saw your post and wondered if we'd be able to see it here in CO (probably not).  When I saw the NOAA graphic I just though you (and others) might find it interesting.

I understand I posted because it said Alabama, which even a novice space weather watcher knows is highly unusual.

I forgot you were in Colorado,

Im going to have to find a midway point between my daughters, right now it looks like that would be Wyoming though I'd probably prefer Colorado

Ha, too late

I don't need much just a couple of acres on the water would be nice. Ive heard good things about Wyoming and it is closer to an even split time-wise

but hell it's likely not gonna happen unless I hit the lottery, Im running out of years...

I thought you did but damn Ive become a bit more forgetful lately brain fog or some BS. Always thought your life sounded cool as hell

Didn't you hurt your arm or shoulder a while back, and have too much chit to do on the homestead to have it put in a cast? think we talked about your place and all you have to do there. Didn't your inlaws have some problems fire/flood not too long ago?

You could be getting some lights, tonight and tomorrow

Yeah, totally blew my right shoulder out.  Tore (3) of the (4) tendons completely off and blew up my rotator cuff (4th tendon was hanging by a thread).  It wasn't a cast, it was having the whole upper right side of my body immobilized for about 2 months and a total of about 6-8 month recovery.  Had to sleep in a chair with my shoulder iced down for the first 2 months because I couldn't lie down.  I wouldn't wish that shit on my worst enemy (well...yeah, maybe I would!  LOL!).  Anyway, that sucked royale!  Had a hip replaced since then and that was a cake-walk compared to the shoulder!  Trust me, don't ever screw up your shoulder...that is NO "fun" at ALL!  (Plus trying to tend to cattle while dealing with that was all sorts of "fun" (not!)).

Yeah, inlaws lost their house on the Chesapeake to a hurricane a long while back.  Your memory must not be that bad because I can't even remember what year that was...long time ago though (pushing 20 years now I think).  Their old place was just a shit shack.  What they rebuilt back is pretty nice (but now 12 feet above grade).  FIL has passed now, but they've been hit by (2) other hurricanes since then.  No damage though because they make everyone build their houses 12-15 feet above grade on these giant concrete foundations.
